Experience Corpus Christi's Coastal Plants and Animals
Many of our RV Guests make their way to South Texas from all over the States, and when they arrive they want to see what Texas has to offer. If you're someone who enjoys plants, animals, and wants to learn about Corpus Christi's coastal habitat, visiting one of our nature preserves would be a great experience.
Although Corpus has quite a few areas of protected natural habitat, not all of them are easily accessible; however, there are two preserves that have wonderful wildlife exhibits, fun activities, planned events, and interesting information about the wildlife and habitat. Both of these preserves are only about a 15 minute drive from Laguna Shore Village RV Park.
The South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center is located at 8545 South Staples Street, Corpus Christi, TX 78413. They are open Monday - Sunday, 9 am - 6 pm. They are nonprofit, but do have admission fees as follows: Children under 3 are free, Children ages 3 - 12 are $5, and Adults are $9. They also offer a discounted price of $7 for those who are active military, college students, or seniors 60+ (with ID).
The Botanical Gardens houses many unique exhibits across the 180-acre preserve. The Samuel Jones Orchid Conservatory, Butterfly House, Rose Garden, Sensory Garden, reptile exhibits, and parrot exhibits are just a small portion of what is to be discovered there. In addition to the various exhibits, the Botanical Gardens has scheduled fun events such as art-making classes, informational classes on how to care for plants, and more! Check out their calendar for scheduled events on their website (listed below). Another perk about this preserve is that it is family friendly- including your four-legged friends. Leashed dogs are welcomed to join in your adventure at almost every part of the preserve.
The Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center is located at 2446 N. Oso Parkway, Corpus Christi, TX 78414. This preserve is owned by the City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department and this is actually a good thing because that means the admission is FREE! The preserve consists of 162 acres of preserved land and also features a learning center, trading post, playground and walking trails. The hours for the Learning Center and Trading Post are Monday - Saturday 8 am - 5 pm. The walking trails and playground are open every day from dawn until dusk.
The Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center has scheduled events such as yoga, guided nature walks, and informative classes. Their calendar of events can be viewed on their website (listed below). The walking trails (which are dog friendly as long as they are leashed), Learning Center, and playground are fun for the entire family, but one of the more unique aspects of this preserve is the Trading Post. At the Trading Post, you can trade items that you have found and you write about where you found your trade and any facts you know about it. There is a list on the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center website that outlines exactly what sort of items can and cannot be traded. It is worth specifying that the items being traded should not come from the preserve or any State or National Parks. The Trading Post is such an exciting and unique way to learn about the world around us and to be able to feel the same excitement when receiving an item by trade as the original founder of that item experienced when they found the piece of nature out in the environment.
If any of this catches your attention, visiting either or both of these preserves would be worth your time. Venture outside by yourself or with the family and experience the beautiful plants and animals that inhabit Corpus Christi, Texas. If you decide to adventure to any nature preserve in Corpus we hope your visit is wonderful, relaxing, and informative.
